The recent announcement that a drawdown of the water level at Salt Fork Lake in Guernsey County could impact recreational activities this summer has led to numerous inquiries about the use of nearby Seneca Lake and others in the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District system.
Seneca Lake, located in Guernsey and Noble counties just south of the intersection of I-70 and I-77 near Cambridge, offers a free public boat launch ramp off Rt. 574 near the dam. A boat horsepower limit of 299 is enforced on the lake. Horsepower limits on Ohio’s waterways are established and enforced by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Watercraft.
Fishing tournaments on Seneca Lake – and all MWCD lakes – also can be scheduled subject to availability, but a registration process is required and permits must be obtained through the MWCD main office by calling toll-free (877) 363-8500. The cost is $25 for tournaments with up to 25 boats, $75 for 26 to 50 boats, $125 for 51 to 75 boats, $175 for 76 to 100 boats and $225 for more than 100 boats. Anglers found taking part in unauthorized fishing tournaments are subject to fines and/or removal from the lake.
Seneca Lake Park at 22172 Park Rd., Senecaville, offers camping and scheduled daily and weekly activities during the summer months. Reservations also can be made – subject to availability – by contacting the park at (740) 685-6013.
The other lakes in the MWCD system and their boat horsepower limits are as follows:
- Beach City, Charles Mill, Clendening, Leesville, Piedmont and Wills Creek lakes – 10 horsepower.
- Atwood Lake – 25 horsepower.
- Tappan Lake – 299 horsepower.
- Pleasant Hill Lake – No limit.
